Spider Veins

Minimally Invasive Treatments in Bellaire & River Oaks, TX

Spider veins on skin

Eliminate Unsightly Veins

Spider veins (telangiectasias) are small, thin blood vessels visible beneath the skin. They usually develop on the face or legs, and may look like a series of thin tree branches or strands of a spider web.

Spider veins are extremely common, affecting nearly half of the adult population of the United States. Many patients are bothered when they develop on prominent areas and seek treatment to eliminate them.

Advanced Solutions: Many of our spider-vein treatments are highly effective and minimally invasive, offering aesthetically pleasing results without painful or lengthy downtime.

Causes & Risk Factors

Spider veins develop from a backflow of blood in the veins. This condition, which results from damaged valves, is called “venous reflux.” As blood collects, the vein walls distend, increasing their size and making them visible under the skin. Common risk factors include:

Increasing age | Hormonal changes | Pregnancy | Obesity | Lack of exercise | Sun exposure | Family history

Diagnosis & Treatment

  • Compression Stockings
The simplest solution is for the patient to wear compression stockings, which put pressure on the affected veins and promote blood flow back to the heart. This method is designed to control the symptoms of spider veins, not remove them.
  • Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a sclerosant—a specialized solution designed to safely collapse them—directly into the veins. This procedure is performed in our office. Each treatment takes approximately one hour, and a typical patient requires two to four treatments for optimal results.
  • Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)
Also called “laser ablation,” EVLT consists of inserting a catheter with a laser probe attached to it directly into the vein. The precise laser heat seals off the damaged vein, naturally diverting blood flow to healthier vessels deeper in the body.

Clear, Beautiful Skin

Once the targeted spider veins are collapsed or sealed, they are safely reabsorbed by the body, leaving the surface of your skin clear, smooth, and aesthetically pleasing.

Prevention Strategies

Although there is no sure way to prevent spider veins, making certain lifestyle changes may reduce the risk of developing them. These include losing weight, exercising regularly, wearing comfortable flat shoes, and moving the legs frequently during long periods of sitting or standing.Prevention Strategies

Symptoms & Considerations

Although most spider veins are only a cosmetic issue, for some people they can cause uncomfortable physical symptoms. These can include aching, burning, swelling, and leg-cramping. Seeking treatment can alleviate both the visual appearance and the physical discomfort.

Treatments like Sclerotherapy and Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) are minimally invasive and generally well-tolerated. Patients report feeling a slight pinch or warming sensation, but the procedures cause significantly less pain than traditional surgical vein-removal methods.
