Reshape & Refine

Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures. During rhinoplasty, the nose is reshaped, reduced or augmented to improve its appearance, correct birth defects, or repair injuries such as a broken nose.

For patients with ongoing sinusitis or a deviated septum, rhinoplasty can be performed in conjunction with endoscopic sinus surgery or septoplasty to effectively treat health and breathing problems while improving appearance.

The Goal: Whether you seek to facilitate breathing or enhance your facial harmony, rhinoplasty modifies bone, skin, and cartilage to reach your aesthetic and functional objectives.

Surgical Objectives

During your procedure, the surgeon may perform one or several of the following to achieve your desired results:

Remove a nasal hump | Modify the bridge | Reshape the tip | Resize the nostrils | Repair injuries | Open breathing passages | Increase or decrease overall size

Techniques & Procedure

  • Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty
In closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made within the nostrils. In open rhinoplasty, an incision is made across the columella. With both methods, the tissues are lifted and the bone and cartilage are sculpted to the desired shape.
  • Cartilage Grafting
If additional cartilage is needed for augmentation, it is frequently taken from the patient’s nasal septum, ear, or other parts of the body to ensure a natural and stable result.
  • Structural Adjustment
If the patient has a deviated septum, the septum and inner structures are adjusted to significantly improve nasal breathing and internal symmetry.

Recovery & Downtime

Immediately after surgery, the nose and eye area are usually bruised and swollen. Splints and nasal packing remain in the nose for a few days. Most patients return to regular activities in about a week.

Although the patient usually looks “normal” a week or two after surgery, minimal swelling may be present for as much as a year as the fine tissues heal.

Post-Surgical Directives

  • Avoid strenuous activities and blowing the nose.
  • Take baths instead of showers initially.
  • Avoid pulling clothing over the head and exaggerated facial expressions.
  • Use SPF 30+ sunscreen and limit dietary sodium.

Risks & Considerations

Complications associated with rhinoplasty are rare and usually minor. Specific risks include recurring nosebleeds, difficulty breathing through the nose, permanent numbness, persistent pain, skin discoloration, scarring, or perforation of the nasal septum.

It is possible that a patient is not satisfied with the final outcome. In such cases, a second surgery, called a revision rhinoplasty, may be performed at a later date to optimize the aesthetic or functional results.
