Natural & Contoured Results

Breast reconstruction surgery replaces the breast that is removed during a mastectomy. While this often involves synthetic implants, autologous fat transfer offers a more natural treatment for rebuilding the breast using your body’s own tissue.

This procedure removes fat from an area with excess, such as the abdomen, and places it in the reconstructed breast. This approach eliminates the “hard” look often associated with implants and provides the secondary benefit of contouring the donor site.

The Benefit: Fat-transfer reconstruction is ideal for women who prefer to avoid foreign materials and have enough body fat available to sufficiently rebuild the breast pocket.

Benefits of Fat-Transfer

A breast reconstructed from a patient’s own tissue is often more similar in shape, contour, and feel to a natural breast than one reconstructed with an implant.

  • Safety & Rejection
There is no risk of implant rejection or capsular contracture because the treatment uses your own biological material.
  • Precision Sculpting
Provides the ability to finely shape and sculpt the breasts for improved symmetry and natural aesthetics.
  • Minimal Scarring
Utilizes a minimal number of small incisions for both harvesting and injection, significantly reducing visible scarring.

The Treatment Process

Prior to fat transfer, a tissue expander is often placed below the chest muscle to create a new “pocket.” Once expanded, fat is removed via liposuction, purified, and injected into the breast on the same day.

The procedure takes 4 to 6 hours under anesthesia. Because some fat is naturally reabsorbed, some patients may require multiple sessions (two to five) to achieve their final desired volume.

Recovery & Results

  • Immediate Care
Postoperative pain and swelling are managed with prescription medication.
  • Return to Activity
Patients can typically return to work and light activities within a few weeks.
  • Long-Term Safety
Studies indicate that fat-transfer reconstruction does not increase the risk of breast cancer recurrence.

Understanding the Risks

Risks specific to fat-transfer reconstruction include calcification, fat embolism, fat necrosis, and the formation of oil cysts. These are discussed in detail during your surgical consultation.

A primary risk is loss of volume as the body reabsorbs some of the transferred fat. This is why multiple stages are sometimes necessary to achieve and maintain the desired breast size.
