Enhance Fullness & Facial Symmetry

Cheek augmentation using implants is a surgical option for those who want to replace facial fullness lost through aging, or for those who simply want more prominent cheekbones. This procedure provides permanent contouring and structural support.

The ideal candidate is old enough that the head and skull are no longer growing, usually reached by late adolescence. They should be in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic surgical goals.

The Materials: Although most often made from solid silicone, high-density porous polyethylene and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene are also advanced materials used for these permanent enhancements.

Types of Cheek Implants

We offer three general types of cheek implants, chosen based on your specific facial structure and aesthetic goals.

  • Malar Implants
Placed directly over the cheekbones, these implants are designed to increase projection and create a more defined facial profile.
  • Submalar Implants
Positioned in the midface just below the cheekbones, these are used to add fullness to a face that appears sunken or gaunt.
  • Combination Implants
A malar/submalar combination provides the ultimate rejuvenation by augmenting both the cheekbones and the midface simultaneously.

The Procedure

Cheek implant surgery is an efficient outpatient procedure, usually taking 30 to 45 minutes under local anesthesia. For each cheek, a small incision is made either inside the mouth near the gumline or inside the lower eyelid.

  • Insertion & Placement
A pocket is carefully created through the incision, where the implant is inserted and secured to bone or soft tissue.
  • Discreet Closing
Incisions are closed with sutures. Those placed in the mouth leave no visible scarring, while eyelid incisions leave only minimal marks.

Recovery & Results

After augmentation, soreness and swelling are typical. Keeping the head elevated is highly recommended to minimize initial swelling.

Patients usually return to work within a week, with about 6 weeks required for a complete recovery. Results are immediate and permanent.

Understanding the Risks

Possible complications include asymmetry, loss of sensation, implant rejection, or implant shifting. As with any surgery, there is a small risk of infection or reaction to anesthesia.

Similar to breast implants, scar capsules can form around cheek implants. However, unlike those associated with breast augmentation, these typically do not affect the cosmetic results of the procedure.
