What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a purely cosmetic surgery that is also frequently identified as body contouring and lipoplasty. During the procedure, fat cells are suctioned by a vacuum and are removed from the body, resulting in a permanent change and enhanced appearance. By changing the body’s shape with minimally invasive technology, the desired final look is accomplished. Liposuction is commonly utilized to get rid of stubborn areas of fat along the body when exercise and diet are not enough. Common sites for liposuction include the abdomen and hips, on the legs in the thighs, buttocks, calves, and ankles, and along the neck, face, chin, chest, and arms.

During the procedure, clients are typically administered a form of anesthesia, such as local, general, or epidural. Over the next 1 to 4 hours, the surgeon will strategically remove the fat from the target areas. Clients may experience pain, bruising, and swelling for the following weeks as a direct result of the procedure. The total recovery time for liposuction is approximately 3-6 months because swelling will go away and the skin will continue to tighten over that time. So, your final results may not be visible for months after the procedure.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

A good candidate for liposuction is already close to their target/goal weight, is generally healthy, and does not have thin or inelastic skin. A good candidate should be within the 30% range of their ideal weight since liposuction is not a quick fix or weight loss solution but instead a way to enhance the body’s aesthetics after the weight has been lost. Healthy skin and muscles can also contribute to the quality of a candidate because the healthier they are, the easier it will be to remove the fat from them. In addition, the skin and muscles are more likely to remain healthy post-op if they were already healthy beforehand. Some medical conditions and complications can increase the risk of a procedure like liposuction. Common ones include heart disease and diabetes. Risk during liposuction can also increase for those who smoke or vape. Clients should communicate these complications to their surgeon ahead of time to see if liposuction can still be a good option for them. Age could also be a consideration since skin tends to loosen as people age, which may cause complications with the procedure. Clients should also have realistic goals and expectations for their procedure to get the most satisfaction out of liposuction.

What is the success rate of liposuction?

The success rate of liposuction is near 100%, with complications occurring in only 0.40% to 2.4% of procedures, making it one of the most successful cosmetic surgeries you can get. However, it is not only very safe but also has a high rate of satisfaction, edging around 80%, according to some surveys. Liposuction was also reported to have satisfied over 70% of individuals who gained weight after the procedure, and over 70% of those same individuals said they would have the procedure done again.

Although liposuction proves to be exceedingly safe, complications may occur during the procedure, as is the case with all surgeries. During the procedure, there is a risk of ecchymosis, edema, infection, hematoma, and more. Additionally, there is an increased risk for individuals with certain conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, tobacco use, and many more. If you have any of these conditions that may increase the risk of liposuction, you should be sure to talk about them with your surgeon before the procedure to see if liposuction may be okay for you.

How long does liposuction last?

As long as you take on a healthy diet, plenty of exercise, and keep the weight off, liposuction can last 5-10 years or even longer than that. Liposuction is considered a permanent procedure because your body cannot produce new fat cells to replace those that are taken out. Instead, if you gain weight, the remaining fat cells in the body can expand and inflate, which in turn can reduce the longevity of your liposuction results. To maintain results, you should lead a healthy lifestyle while also following the instructions of your surgeon for aftercare.
